While the weather in the Midwest is usually unpredictable, this year is proving to be especially unique. We were in the high-tunnel watering the tulips in t-shirts and hats last Tuesday and then it was snowing the next day—a 60 degree temp swing in 24 hours!
Milwaukee could see record-breaking temperatures yet again, following the city’s warmest February and warmest winter on record.

One thing is for sure, the unseasonably warm weather is encouraging an early season for our tulips!
Almost all of our 15 varieties are popping up out of the dirt now. We have been watering heavily during the warm spells and working on pest management as well. We are watering each 4, 50 feet beds by hand since we can’t set up our irrigation until chances of it freezing pass.
It’s definitely a labor of love. I’m already counting down the days until we can set up the irrigation permanently for the summer! Luckily, I have two little helpers who love to use the watering cans.
